From 3 to 10 October 2012, the community of Assynt in north west Scotland will hold a festival celebrating the cultural and natural heritage of the area. During the year lots of local organisations are running events, which will culminate in the festival week.
ThereĀ will be a public meeting in Stoer Village Hall to discuss ideas for the Assynt Festival, at 8pm on Thursday 9 February. All welcome!
Among the events currently jostling for space in the programme are:
- Guided walks exploring hotspots of geology, archaeology, history, wildlife, literature and Gaelic
- Archaeological dig-related events
- Historical reconstruction of crafts, such as building a kiln and firing pots
- Music through the ages – a day long event of music from neolithic to now
- Gaelic song workshops and language lessons
- Ceilidhs
- Construction of a sgoth (traditional skiff) and race with others (e.g. Ullapool, Coigach, Lewis)
- Assynt-wide wireless network used to connect village hall events
- Art and craft exhibition
- Made in Assynt craft fairs
- Maker-of-the-day open studios and art and craft demonstrations
- Decorating the community room walls
- Traditional country dancing showcase
- Celebration of the marine heritage, economy, transport and wildlife.
- Photography and poetry competition
- Drum-making from deer skins
- Question time
- It’s a knock-out
- Venison tasting and a mediaeval banquet
